Frequently Asked Questions

Here are questions I have been asked most frequently and my answers to those questions. I welcome any questions you may have which I have not covered. You may email them to: [email protected].

What does “Licensed Massage Therapist” mean?

In New York State, massage therapists must comply with strict regulations related to professional training, state licensing examinations, and continuing education in order to obtain and retain their license. In this way the state guarantees that you will be treated by someone carefully trained in the treatment and manipulation of soft tissue.

How do I know if this is the right treatment for me?

In an initial phone call prior to setting up an appointment, we will discuss your situation in order to determine if a muscular therapy treatment is appropriate for you. While most people can benefit from touch therapy, there are a few exceptions. I will let you know if your needs are beyond the scope of my experience and training. If you have any questions, please call me at 212-362-3889.

Is treatment uncomfortable?

My approach is designed to work within your comfort zone. I always ask that you let me know if anything is about to become uncomfortable. Depending on the session, it is possible that you may feel a bit sore for a day or two. This is a normal reaction that is similar to how you may feel after exercise that your body is not accustomed to. Usually the benefits of treatment outweigh any temporary discomfort. I will always recommend things you can do at home after treatments to minimize any potential soreness.

What should I wear during a session?

You will be draped at all times during a session and undershorts are kept on at all times. It is fine to wear running shorts if that is more comfortable for you. Jewelry, watches and contact lenses should be removed.

How often should I schedule a treatment?

After the initial evaluation and treatment, we will discuss a recommended plan. You will be given suggestions regarding what you can do at home to extend the benefits of treatment and facilitate healing. Sessions are always scheduled according to your needs and preference.

What is your cancellation policy?

I have a strict 24-hour cancellation policy. I do not charge for medical emergencies, but when you cancel on short notice for any other reason, my full fee is charged. Should you need to cancel less than 24 hours before your appointment, you are welcome to send a friend to take your session. I would be happy to accommodate your desire to give your treatment as a gift. Payment arrangements for this gift must be made before the appointment hour.

What if I inadvertently forget my appointment? Will you still charge me?

Yes. Not coming is treated the same as a less-than-24-hour cancellation. The full fee is due.

What if I arrive late for my appointment?

The hour you book is your time. If you arrive late and another client is scheduled for the hour immediately following your session, you will receive a shorter treatment. If I have some free time after your hour, I will accommodate your lateness whenever possible.

What is your confidentiality policy?

Everything that transpires during your professional treatment with me is held in absolute confidence and never shared — even with another professional — without your permission.

What is your work setting?

I practice massage therapy in a quiet, professional office located on West 71th Street in an elevator building. House calls may be arranged depending on my availability if you own a table and provide linens. The fee for a home session is higher than for an office visit.

Should I eat, drink alcohol, or take drugs before a treatment?

A massage therapy treatment is always best received by your body and spirit when you are sober and have eaten at least one hour before arriving. If your schedule unavoidably causes you to eat or drink immediately before a treatment, I will endeavor to make you as comfortable as possible.

Do you use lotions or oils during a treatment?

Traditionally, massage therapy utilizes a lotion or oil as a lubricant to reduce friction. I use unscented massage creams that leave the skin feeling soft and not greasy.

I am a highly allergic person. How do you accommodate people with allergies?

I use unscented products with natural ingredients that are safe for most sensitive skin. If you prefer, you are welcome to bring your own product that you know is compatible with your sensitivity.

What is your policy about insurance reimbursement?

Third party payment is not accepted. You are welcome to request a detailed receipt for all sessions. In the event that your health insurance provider covers treatments, you are responsible for submitting the necessary forms to your insurance company. I will be available to answer questions and communicate with insurance case managers to facilitate the processing of your claims whenever necessary.
